Wow, the TV deals are coming fast and furious all of a sudden. Last week I showed you a 31.5-incher for $209, and today there’s something bigger and better.

For newsletter subscribers only (as always, it’s free to sign up), Newegg has the Auria EQ4088p 40-inch LCD HDTV for $379.99 shipped. That’s after applying coupon code EMCKEKG54 at checkout.

It wasn’t very long ago that a refurbished 32-inch HDTV for $399 was a killer deal. The Auria is new, so you get the manufacturer’s full one-year warranty. Oh, and a substantially larger screen.

I’ll admit I’m not familiar with the brand, but the specs are about what you’d expect for a lower-end TV: 1,920×1,080-pixel resolution, three HDMI inputs, a built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner, and a bunch of scaling/filtering features I don’t pretend to understand.

I’m guessing this is a fairly new model, or at least new to Newegg, as there are no user reviews at the moment–and I couldn’t find any mention of this TV anywhere else. So it’s a bit of a gamble, I suppose–but that’s part of being a cheapskate, right?

And make no mistake: a new 40-inch HDTV for $380 out the door–no rebates or anything–is a red-hot smokin’ killer deal. Makes me wish I was in the market for one!

Nothing like that had ever happened to me online,  and to say the least, it was EXTREMELY disconcerting.  I almost resisted posting anything about the hack on here to avoid giving any satisfaction to whoever did it.  But then I realized that I might be able to help someone else avoid the same thing happening to them, so I’m writing this to make a couple of preventative suggestions to other blog owners as well as to ask anyone who knows more about the subject to please comment on the post for the good of all of us.

I’m not going to insult the hacker on here since God knows what else he/she could do to this or any of my other sites.  I was lucky in the sense that it only took about 2 hours to change it back to normal and I hadn’t lost any of my content.  I’m sure that it could have been much worse.  The only reason I can think of that someone might have done something like that (besides just for the heck of it) was the other message on the hacked pages which said “You  Have No Security!”…And they were right.

Perhaps it was just a beginners mistake, but I hadn’t thought to install any preventative measures against hackers in my site, and since all WordPress blogs have the same default admin URLs and often usernames with weak passwords, I left myself vulnerable and learned the hard way.

Here are my suggestions and I’m hoping that my readers – a very clever bunch, indeed – will have some more to add to the subject.

1)  Install the Better WordPress Security plugin (or one of the other available security plugins) on your site.  I’m not sure exactly what it does or how it works, but I feel safer with it in place.

2) Change the admin URL from the default www.yourblog.com/wp-admin to some other page name.

3) Make sure that your Username & Password are STRONG.  Use both capital and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols all together so it’s more difficult for a hacker to crack.

I sincerely hope that this post helps out and if it saves at least 1 person from going through what I did last week or worse, it will have been worth writing.

Whatever happened to desktop publishing software? A decade ago you had your pick of a dozen or more programs, but now the field is practically empty.

Granted, you can still buy Adobe PageMaker or QuarkXPress for a small fortune (they still run $499 and $799, respectively), but what if you just want a simple program for creating newsletters, brochures, flyers, and the like?

Enter Serif PagePlus X4, a terrific desktop-publishing application that’s ideal for designing print and Web-based documents alike.

Today only, PricePlunge.com has PagePlus X4 for just $9.99, plus $1.99 for shipping. That’s far and away the lowest price I’ve ever seen for this software.

I should note that Serif recently introduced a newer version of the program, PagePlus X5, but most users will find X4 more than capable enough.

Indeed, although you can use PagePlus for any number of everyday projects (calendars, greeting cards, etc.), it’s powerful enough to create professional-level documents (books, magazines, etc.).

In addition to robust page-layout tools, PagePlus features a PDF editor, logo builder, and photo lab. It also comes with a huge assortment of templates so you can hit the design-ground running. And to help beginners get started, it incorporates tutorial videos.

The software supports nearly every imaginable output option, including four color separations, press-ready PDFs, double-sided printing, and Web publishing.

In short, PagePlus X4 can stand toe-to-toe with Quark and PageMaker, but at a fraction of the cost.

I’m a huge fan of the program, which I’ve used for years. For 10 bucks, this qualifies as a must-have.
